A PLACE AT THE TABLE

Mom was quiet; I think that she was praying;
Dad was being strong, if he was scared, he wasn't saying.
And I could hear their voices from inside the bedroom door,
Saying something about choices, and a tiny life they couldn't just ignore
No need to say more...

Now, Mama’s picking baby names, I hope she chooses Heather.
Dad brought my old crib upstairs; we've been putting it back together.
Now me and Billy have to share my room
And Annie has to come straight home every afternoon;
The baby’s coming soon.

There’s a child who has a home here, there is nothing to decide.
And what G-d has put together, no one else can set aside.
Time will prove me out, and
Faith removes all doubt...
Though not yet in our world, not yet in her cradle,
This child has a place here at our table.

One day Heather’s running ‘round the house in Annie’s clothes;
I blink and she’s in high school, that’s how fast, I swear, it goes.
All those Christmases and birthdays are forever in my mind.
Though we've grown and gone our own ways, we're connected
by the days we've left behind
Moving forward through time...

So me and Ann and Billy come back home this time of year.
Heather wouldn't miss it, not with all the family here.
But now she’s worrying, see there’s this thing
She just can’t reconcile
See, the guy that she’s been seeing says that he ain’t ready for that wedding aisle,
Now she’s carrying his child.

There’s a child who has a home here, there is nothing to decide.
And what G-d has put together, no one else can set aside.
Time will prove me out, and
Faith removes all doubt...
Though not yet in our world, not yet in his cradle,
This child has a place here at our table.

Daddy’s not as tall now, or maybe we've all grown,
Preoccupied since Mama died, he shouldn't be alone.
My aunt says that his voice cracks when she calls him on the phone
But when he talks about his family it’s a very different tone.
Where the heart is that’s your home.

So, Heather and her Tommy placed the call to Dad today.
“Hey Grandpa come and visit me”, Tommy says, “but this time, stay!”
My mom says that you've spent your share of Autumns raking leaves;
You've had enough of shoveling snow and taking down the screens!”
This is what family means...

There’s a man who has a home here, there is nothing to decide.
And what G-d has put together no one else can set aside.
Time has proved me out and
Faith removed all doubt
As long as we are in this world and able,
You'll always have a place here at our table.
