The Waters of Lethe
At the end of the flight I flew toward the light
Silver voices were whispering beneath me.
Peaceful and white, like a lamp in the night
I had come to The Waters of Lethe.
The tips of her waves shone like candle-lit graves
Her shadows drew forward to greet me
The acts of my days danced before me like plays
As I pondered The Waters of Lethe.
Dressed in emerald and gold, her smile gentle, yet cold
Icy eyes that regarded me deeply
Like a spell taking hold her words entered my soul
She said “Drink from The Waters of Lethe”
It must have been clear, my uncertainty there
For she held both her hands out to reach me
“Darkness and fear” she said, “disappear
When you Drink from The Waters of Lethe!”
Four score years and three
Were given once to me
To be spent and to be used
In the manner I should choose.
Two decades were spent as a child
In pointless games I myself styled
Thinking this would always be
Blind to time evading me.
Three decades were spent trying to win
The time I’d wasted back again
Crafting every precious hour
Into something that would matter.
Three more decades were accrued
The fruit of seeds I planted grew
A legacy of sorts took hold
Proudly watching as I grew old.
Three years spent in reflection
Not three minutes of regret
And now The Waters of Lethe
Beckon me seductively and tell me that it’s
Time to forget...
Time to forget...
Time to forget...
Time to forget...
Now I kneel at the brink
She calls to me; “Drink!”
But I ponder the face in the ocean
As my life was displayed
A decision was made
Setting my heart and my feet into motion.
So I soar and I fly
And I roar and I cry
Like a madman possessed
Till the breath in my chest
Is a buzzsaw that turns
A fire that burns
In the darkness far below
Lethe’s tempting waters flow
The price for immortality
Every precious memory
————————————————
I might enter Providence,
Might never have to die
But with no frame of reference
What purpose then had I?
And I might live eternally
Mortality forsworn
But with no past to reckon me
Just as well I’d not been born
